Container Loading Calculator for Machinery

Work out how many machines fit in a shipping container before you commit to an order. Enter your container type and the packed dimensions of one unit — the calculator reports the load by floor footprint, by volume and by weight, then tells you which limit actually binds.

How the estimate is calculated

The calculator applies the same three constraints a factory loading team uses, and reports the smallest of them — because the tightest limit is the one that decides the count.

  • Floor footprint — how many units fit in a grid on the container floor, allowing a clearance gap between units. This is usually the binding limit for tracked machinery, because tracked machines are rarely stackable.
  • Usable volume — the container’s internal volume with a practical fill factor, since irregular machines like tricycles and mower decks leave voids that cannot be used.
  • Weight limit — the container’s maximum cargo payload. Dense cargo such as concrete mixers can reach this ceiling while the container is still half empty.

The tool also checks the container door opening. A machine that fits inside the container can still be impossible to load if its roll bar or canopy pushes it past the door height — a common surprise that is far cheaper to solve at the factory than at the port.

Container dimensions used

  • 20ft standard (20GP) — internal 5,898 × 2,352 × 2,393 mm, door 2,340 × 2,280 mm, max cargo roughly 28,200 kg.
  • 40ft standard (40GP) — internal 12,032 × 2,352 × 2,393 mm, door 2,340 × 2,280 mm, max cargo roughly 26,700 kg.
  • 40ft high cube (40HC) — internal 12,032 × 2,352 × 2,698 mm, door 2,340 × 2,585 mm, max cargo roughly 26,500 kg.

Individual containers vary slightly by manufacturer and age, and the usable payload depends on the haulage route’s road-weight rules. Treat the result as a planning figure and confirm the final count with the factory against your exact models and configuration.

Using the result to cut freight cost

Freight is charged per container, not per machine, so the number this tool returns is the number that sets your freight cost per unit. Two practical consequences:

  • Filling the container is the single biggest lever on landed cost. A container that leaves the factory 60% full costs exactly the same as one that leaves completely full.
  • Mixing product lines fills the gaps. If your mower order leaves floor space, adding mixers, accessories or spare parts uses it at no extra freight.

Frequently asked questions

How many mini dump trucks fit in a 40ft container?

Typically 5 to 8 tracked mini dump trucks in a 40ft high cube. These machines are dense — often 700 to 1,100 kg each — so the weight limit usually binds before the volume does.

Is this calculator accurate for my shipment?

It is an estimate using standard container dimensions and a practical fill factor. Real loads depend on your exact model, whether roll bars fold, and how well units nest. The factory confirms the final count with a loading plan.

Why can a machine fit inside the container but not through the door?

Container door openings are narrower and lower than the internal space — about 2,340 × 2,280 mm on a standard container. A machine’s roll bar or canopy can exceed the door height even when the machine fits inside.

Can tracked machines be stacked to fit more?

Normally no. Compact tracked machinery is heavy enough that stacking risks crushing the lower unit and overloading the container floor. Plan a single layer and set the calculator to “not stackable”.

What percentage of a container can I realistically fill?

For boxy equipment such as skid steer loaders, 80 to 85% of internal volume is achievable. For irregular machines like tricycles or wide-deck mowers, expect 60 to 75% unless the factory fills gaps with spare parts.
